A unique design, by Matthew Humphries, the ultra-rare SuperSports model features a targa-style roof. The aluminium bodywork of the Aero SuperSports is Superformed, a process by which the whole car is effectively blown into shape. The passenger compartment has a layer of ash hardwood sandwiched between the alloy outer body panels and the rigid aluminium chassis. This wood will absorb energy and will help maintain the longevity of the alloy body over the life of the car. Morgan calls this process 21st Century coach building.
The original Aero 8 was a groundbreaking sales triumph. This success led to the new Aero 8 SuperSports in 2010. With a kerb weight of just 1,180 kg, this was a flying machine, sprinting from rest to 60 mph in 4.5 secs when mated to the 6-speed automatic gearbox. Charles Morgan, grandson of the company’s founder, said ‘the Morgan Aero SuperSports is a luxurious flamboyant sports car which also remains true to Morgan's philosophy of lightweight minimalist simplicity. It is a celebration of our love of cars and the romance of travel and is a fitting model to announce during Morgan's centenary year.’
Autocar wrote, “It looks amazing. Undeniably a Morgan, but with a modern twist, which means it will steal the attention away from just about any other car on the road. The effect is even more pronounced with the side-exit exhaust system, and the bassy V8 soundtrack.”
Top Gear magazine continued, “Like nothing else on the road. The Aero SuperSports is the development of the Aero 8 and its limited run Aeromax special. It’s taken cues from both, being open-topped like the Aero 8 and as achingly good-looking, beautifully detailed and as expensive as the Aeromax. The Aero SuperSports is powered by the Bavarian firm’s 4.8-litre V8… it’s seriously rapid, in a way that few cars are today. There are no electronics to help you, leaving you with just your right foot to mete out the 368bhp to the rear wheels… Take the roof off to enjoy it more. The suspension’s taut, but not overly compromising, the steering quick and nicely weighted – a decent amount of information coming through the wheel. The brakes are mighty. Yet for all its ferocity it does civility too, as it’s easy to imagine covering big miles behind the wheel.”
