Caterham Super Sprint 60th

Caterham Super Sprint 60th

Caterham has released a “new” version of its popular Seven – the Seven Sprint – which made its debut this weekend at the Goodwood Revival.

Interestingly, the Sprint was planned in the mid-1960s, but only just come to fruition in the latter half of 2016.

Boasting retro-styling, Caterham hopes the Sprint will appeal to Seven purists, going on sale from £27,995.

Caterham has also said the new Seven Sprint provides the perfect scene-setter for the brand’s “60 Years of the Seven” anniversary, which is being celebrated next year.

It is powered by the same 79bhp, three-cylinder Suzuki engine found in the company’s entry-level Seven 160 model, and can be specified in a choice of six colours that were British manufacturer colours between 1966 and 1967.

Caterham Cars CEO, Graham Macdonald, said: “We have always prided ourselves on continually developing the Seven during the 44 years we have been custodian of the model.

“But we never wished to dismiss our heritage either and I know there are plenty of Seven purists and aficionados out there who will really appreciate the level of detail we’ve gone to with the Sprint to resurrect the spirit of those early cars.

“It’s a car that has been built today, with all the benefits that modern engineering brings with it, but the essence of the swinging ‘60s and is the perfect precursor to our 60th-anniversary celebration in 2017.”

The vehicle’s chassis is powder-coated grey to imitate that of a Series 2 Lotus 7. The suspension and rollover bar are also similar to that found on Colin Chapman’s original car.

The interior is finished in hand-stiched upholstery, finished in a bold scarlet red colour. Wood features on the steering wheel and dashboard, and the tachometer features red and yellow sectors reminiscent of ‘60s style.

The new Seven Sprint will only be available as a factory-built car.
